Laparoscopic Roux-En-Y, commonly known as Gastric Bypass Surgery, creates a small stomach pouch that bypasses a large portion of the stomach and duodenum and attaches directly to the small intestine.
Gastric Bypass surgery is a procedure in which a small section of the stomach is closed off, creating a stomach pouch; that pouch is then connected directly to the small intestine, allowing food to bypass the rest of the stomach, as well as the start of the intestinal tract. As a result, the new stomach will hold less food and keep it for a shorter period of time.
Because it creates a smaller stomach and changes the digestive process, Gastric Bypass is considered restrictive and malabsorptive. Following the procedure, you will need to commit to a lifelong maintenance plan which focuses on foods your body can easily process, as well as a regular exercise program.
In addition to consistent follow up with your physician after Gastric Bypass surgery, PinnacleHealth also offers options to help you along the way, such as specialized nutrition services and support groups.
